I'm planning to keep my current PC for another couple of years rather than build an entirely new system. I found a Ryzen 5 5600X3D on sale for $165 and bought it as a possible upgrade, but I'm wondering whether I should install it or return it. I'm not expecting a massive performance jump—I mainly want smoother frame times, fewer dips, and ideally around a 10% improvement in 1% lows and average FPS. I play everything at 1440p. My current system has a Ryzen 5 3600, Radeon RX 5700 XT, 64GB of DDR4, and a B450 Tomahawk Max motherboard. The games I play most are Monster Hunter Wilds, iRacing, Le Mans Ultimate, Valorant, OSRS/RS3, and WoW. In particular, I'm hoping to reduce dips below roughly 55 FPS in Le Mans Ultimate and Monster Hunter Wilds. Was the 5600X3D a good buy for $165, or would my GPU limit the upgrade too much?

The 5600X3D should provide a solid uplift in CPU-limited games, particularly WoW, Valorant, and simulation or racing titles. The extra 3D cache can also help with consistency. Your 5700 XT may prevent large gains at 1440p, but the newer CPU gives you more headroom if you upgrade the graphics card later. At $165, it’s a reasonable way to extend the life of the AM4 system.
Don’t expect the same improvement in every game. If the GPU is already running near full utilization, the CPU swap may barely change performance. If the game is CPU-bound or suffers from inconsistent frame times, the difference should be much more noticeable. WoW and competitive games are likely to benefit more than a heavily GPU-limited 1440p title.
At 1440p, your RX 5700 XT will limit the maximum FPS in many games, so the average increase may not be dramatic. The bigger improvement should be smoother frame delivery, better 1% lows, and fewer CPU-related stutters or hitching. That can make the upgrade feel worthwhile even when the FPS counter barely changes.
