Is upgrading from a Ryzen 5 7500F to a 7800X3D worthwhile for 1440p gaming?

I'm considering upgrading from a Ryzen 5 7500F to a used Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which costs just under $300 where I live. I could sell my 7500F to recover some of the cost, but I'm also wondering whether it would be smarter to wait for the newer 9800X3D to become more affordable. My system has a Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB, 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, and I mainly play Marvel Rivals along with occasional AAA games at 1440p. I don't always prioritize maximum graphics settings or ray tracing. The 7500F generally keeps my GPU around 90–100% utilization, but Marvel Rivals can suffer noticeable 1% low drops during large team fights and when multiple ultimates happen at once. Would the 7800X3D meaningfully improve those dips, or would the game's optimization and GPU load remain the bigger issue?

The extra cores and 3D V-Cache could help Marvel Rivals during scenes with lots of players and effects on screen. The 7800X3D is also still a very capable gaming CPU, and just under $300 used is a fairly attractive price if the chip is in good condition. That said, the upgrade is primarily about smoother lows and better consistency—not a huge improvement in every game.

That’s the reason I’m tempted. Even if the average frame rate barely changes, smoother performance during those fights would be useful.

For most AAA games at 1440p, the RX 7800 XT will still be the limiting factor, so average FPS probably won’t improve dramatically. The main benefit of the 7800X3D would be smoother frame pacing and better 1% lows, especially in CPU-heavy situations. Check your GPU usage during the exact team-fight drops—if it stays close to 100%, the GPU or the game’s optimization may be responsible rather than the 7500F.

GPU usage is usually around 90–100%, but the big team fights in Marvel Rivals are where I’m mainly hoping to improve the 1% lows, not just increase average FPS.

If your current performance is acceptable outside of a few badly optimized scenarios, there’s no urgent need to upgrade. The 7500F is already strong enough to drive the 7800 XT well, and most AAA games at 1440p won’t show a major difference with a 7800X3D. Consider upgrading only if the stuttering genuinely bothers you and the resale value makes the cost reasonable; otherwise, waiting for newer CPUs to drop in price is sensible.

Everything is generally good except for those specific Marvel Rivals team fights. I’m still unsure whether that’s a CPU limitation or just the game and GPU struggling when the action gets chaotic.
