I'm looking to upgrade my PC, but current RAM prices are making me cautious. I have an i5-8600K and a GeForce RTX 4070 12GB, and I'm considering the Ryzen 7 5800X3D because it's one of the strongest processors that still uses DDR4. I'd need a new motherboard and may need new memory depending on compatibility. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade, or would another platform offer better value?

If you can find a local bundle deal, a Ryzen 5 7500X3D or another newer X3D processor may be cheaper and faster than buying a 5800X3D with an AM4 board. Otherwise, the 5800X3D or 5700X3D paired with a good B550 board is a straightforward DDR4 upgrade. Just make sure the board supports the processor and budget for adequate cooling.
AM5 is the more forward-looking choice if you can stretch the budget. A Ryzen 5 7600 or a comparable newer chip can perform around the 5800X3D level or better in many games and leaves room for future CPU upgrades, but you’ll need DDR5. If DDR5 and a new motherboard push the cost too high, AM4 remains a sensible value option.
If you already own suitable DDR4, the 5800X3D can make sense because you may only need the processor, motherboard, and cooler rather than a full memory upgrade. In gaming, the extra cache can provide a substantial improvement over the 8600K, particularly in CPU-heavy titles and situations where you want steadier frame rates.
Before settling on AM4, compare the total cost of an Intel Core i5-14600K or 14600KF with a B760 DDR4 motherboard. It can be faster than the 5800X3D in some workloads and may cost less overall, although both platforms are effectively at the end of their upgrade paths. Pick whichever complete combination is cheaper and fits your gaming needs.
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is still a strong gaming upgrade, especially if your i5-8600K is limiting the RTX 4070. It uses AM4 and DDR4, but you’ll need an AM4 motherboard and a decent aftermarket cooler because the chip doesn’t include one. Check the board’s CPU support list and BIOS version before buying; some older boards need an update, preferably with BIOS flashback support.
I tested Elden Ring and the processor was sitting near 100% usage almost constantly, so it definitely seems like I’m CPU-limited there. Thanks for the advice!

The 14600K is a great option, but I’d compare its price directly with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D. The cheaper bundle is probably the better buy.
