Is upgrading from an i7-10700K to an i9-10900K worth it for gaming?

I recently upgraded my graphics card to a Radeon 9070 XT and I'm concerned that my i7-10700K might bottleneck it. Since I'm already using the compatible motherboard, RAM, and cooler, the i9-10900K is the only straightforward CPU upgrade I can make without replacing most of my platform. Would moving from the 10700K to the 10900K noticeably improve gaming performance, or should I keep my current system and save for a newer CPU, motherboard, and possibly memory later?

If you want a clearly noticeable CPU upgrade, skip the 10900K and save for a newer platform. A modern CPU and motherboard can improve minimum FPS and CPU-heavy games much more, but moving platforms may require new memory and other parts. Reusing your current RAM with a compatible newer DDR4 platform could reduce the cost, depending on the deals available.

The only situation where I’d recommend the 10900K is if it’s nearly free or costs very little after selling the 10700K. Upgrading just to eliminate a possible bottleneck usually isn’t worthwhile—check your actual GPU usage and CPU utilization in the games you play first.

I’d keep the 10700K, especially if you’re playing at 1440p or higher. At those resolutions the GPU is usually the limiting factor, and the 10900K won’t add much. If you have a Z-series board and decent memory, make sure your BIOS settings, XMP, and CPU overclock are configured properly before spending money.

For gaming, the difference would be extremely small—probably not something you could feel or reliably notice. The 10900K mainly gives you two additional cores and better multicore performance for rendering, encoding, and other heavily threaded workloads. It also uses more power and produces more heat, so it isn’t a great upgrade unless you find one very cheaply.
