My PC is about four years old and still handles the games I play reasonably well, so I'd rather upgrade a component than build an entirely new system. The current hardware is an ASUS ROG Strix B550-E Gaming motherboard, Ryzen 7 5800X, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti with 8GB VRAM, 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory, and a 750W power supply.
I mainly play Battlefield 6 at 2560×1440 on a 144Hz monitor. In that game, the 8GB of VRAM appears to be fully used—or slightly exceeded—even when some graphics settings are set to medium or low. I'm also considering upgrading to 32GB of RAM, although DDR4 availability is becoming more limited where I live.
Would buying a newer, more powerful graphics card make sense with this motherboard, processor, memory, and power supply, or would another component limit its performance? I believe newer graphics cards should work in the B550 motherboard, but I'd appreciate advice on suitable upgrade options and whether a complete system replacement would be better value.

A GPU upgrade makes sense here, especially for 1440p gaming. The Ryzen 7 5800X is still capable, and the B550 platform can run newer graphics cards without a compatibility problem. Your 750W power supply should also be sufficient for many current midrange and upper-midrange cards, assuming it is a decent-quality unit.
For a meaningful upgrade over the 3060 Ti, look for a card with at least 12GB of VRAM, preferably 16GB if you want better longevity. A Radeon RX 9070 or 9070 XT would be strong options, while an RTX 5070 or 5070 Ti may be preferable if you specifically want Nvidia features. Check the exact card’s power requirements and physical dimensions before buying.
You do not need to replace the whole computer just because the motherboard uses DDR4 or has been superseded. AM4 systems can still pair well with modern GPUs. At 1440p, the graphics card is usually the main limitation, particularly when the game is running out of VRAM.
I would upgrade to 32GB of DDR4 if you can find a reasonably priced matching kit, but it is not necessary to replace the motherboard and CPU just for that. A 2×16GB DDR4-3200 or DDR4-3600 kit would be the sensible choice. Avoid paying an inflated price for old memory unless your current system is actually running out of RAM.
The best choice depends on pricing and whether you care about features such as ray tracing, upscaling, and frame generation. The RX 9070 XT generally offers a lot of conventional rendering performance and 16GB of VRAM, while the RTX 5070 Ti also has 16GB and may offer stronger software and ray-tracing support. The regular RTX 5070 can still be worthwhile, but compare its price carefully because a small increase may put a 16GB model within reach.
Since prices vary so much between individual models, compare actual performance, VRAM, cooler quality, warranty, power requirements, and local pricing rather than assuming the most expensive version is automatically better. If current prices are unusually high, waiting is reasonable, but your existing platform is not a reason by itself to avoid a GPU upgrade.
That helps. I was worried the older platform would prevent a newer card from being used properly, but replacing the entire PC seems hard to justify if the 5800X is still adequate for 1440p gaming.

I’m already using a 2560×1440, 144Hz display, so the goal would be better performance at that resolution. The 9070 XT seems noticeably cheaper than some 5070 Ti models in my area, which makes it more appealing.
