My husband was playing a demanding new game on his laptop when it suddenly powered off. The laptop felt extremely hot, so we let it cool for about three hours before trying again. It still won't start, even after holding the power button for 30 seconds and checking the battery. Could overheating have damaged something, or is there a reset or troubleshooting step we should try before replacing the laptop?

You can also test it with the charger connected and the battery disconnected, but opening the back may affect the warranty. If there are still no lights, fan movement, or other signs of life after these tests, it should be inspected by a repair technician before assuming it needs to be replaced.
Try disconnecting the charger and removing the battery if it’s removable. Then hold the power button for about 60 seconds to discharge any residual power. Reconnect only the charger and try starting it. If the battery is internal, leave it in place and still try the power-button reset.
If possible, leave it unplugged overnight and try again when it’s completely cold. Also check whether the charger’s indicator light works and whether the laptop shows any charging light when connected. If it powers on afterward, make sure the vents aren’t blocked and raise the back slightly to improve airflow while gaming.
This is worth trying, but if it still shows no lights or signs of power, the failure may be in the charging circuit or motherboard rather than just a temporary thermal shutdown.
