I have an ASUS ZenBook 14 (UX425J) that I bought in 2020 for university work. Recently, the battery started draining much faster than usual, even after a full charge. Now the laptop will not power on unless the charger is connected, and it shuts off immediately if I unplug it. A battery report also shows that the battery health is very poor. Before I order a replacement, could another component—such as the charging circuit or motherboard—be responsible, or is this behavior almost certainly caused by the battery?

There are charging and power-management components on the motherboard, so a board failure is technically possible. However, with a laptop from 2020 that was already showing rapid battery drain, the battery is much more likely than a motherboard fault. If a known-good replacement battery does not solve it, then the charging circuit would be worth investigating.
The battery is the most likely cause. A battery that has reached the end of its useful life may still appear to charge, but it can no longer provide enough power to run the laptop on its own. Since the battery report is already showing poor health and the machine dies as soon as external power is removed, replacing the battery is the sensible first step.
A replacement battery is probably all you need. Once you open the laptop, you could also clean out dust and replace the thermal paste if it has never been serviced, but those things would not normally cause the laptop to shut off immediately when unplugged.
