My Alienware m17 R5 is about three years old. I was watching a show when I heard a click and the laptop immediately powered off. It had worked normally before this and was mainly used for browsing, schoolwork, and streaming. It never had problems while unplugged, and I haven't noticed any malware-related issues. I tried several wall outlets, both my regular and spare charger, leaving it plugged in for a few hours, and holding the power button while connected and disconnected from power, but there are no signs of life. Is there anything else I can safely try before taking it to a repair shop or replacing it?

If you’re comfortable removing the bottom cover, you can try a power reset: disconnect the internal battery, hold the power button for about a minute, then reconnect the battery and try starting it again. Only do this if you can safely access the battery and won’t risk damaging the machine. A multimeter can also test whether the charger is producing power, but if you’re not familiar with one, it’s safer to have a technician do the testing.
Since you already tried multiple outlets and chargers, this sounds more like a hardware or power-delivery failure than a software problem. If the laptop shows no LEDs, fan movement, or other response at all, it will probably need a proper diagnosis rather than a Windows or malware fix. A repair shop can check the charging circuit, battery, and motherboard.

If there is still absolutely no light, fan noise, or response after the reset, I’d stop troubleshooting at home and take it in for diagnostics. A sudden click followed by total loss of power can point to a failed internal component.
