MacBook Pro Shuts Down at 64% Battery Despite Showing 100% Capacity

I have a 2025 MacBook Pro with an M4 Pro chip and 24 GB of memory. For a while, the battery indicator has been behaving strangely: after charging to 100%, it remains at 100% for roughly two hours, then begins dropping normally. However, whenever it reaches exactly 64%, the Mac suddenly shuts down. It will not start again until I connect the charger, at which point the battery may show around 5%. The built-in diagnostics reported no problems, and leaving it connected to power for an extended period did not fix the issue. The battery currently reports 100% maximum capacity and 99 cycles, and I bought the Mac in April 2025. What could be causing these inaccurate readings?

Apple-silicon Macs do not have the old Intel-style SMC reset procedure, so there is not really a reset that should be tried here. You can shut the Mac down completely, connect the charger, and start it again, but repeatedly recalibrating or leaving it plugged in is unlikely to repair a reading that consistently fails at 64%. Apple Diagnostics can miss an intermittent or failing battery gauge, so service testing is the next sensible step.

That pattern usually points to a battery fuel-gauge or battery-cell problem rather than normal battery wear. The Mac is likely misreading the remaining charge, then shutting down when the affected cell can no longer provide enough voltage. A 100% maximum-capacity reading does not rule that out, especially since the problem occurs at the same percentage every time. Back up your data, install any available macOS updates, and contact Apple or an authorized repair provider for a battery inspection. Since it was purchased in April 2025 and has only 99 cycles, it should be worth asking about warranty service.

The battery reports 100% maximum capacity and 99 cycles, although I am not sure the capacity reading can be trusted because of this behavior. I bought the Mac in April 2025.
