Malwarebytes Found Several Trojans—Should I Clean Install Windows 11?

I accidentally installed a suspicious program after trusting some online recommendations. A window briefly appeared and disappeared, and about ten minutes later I installed Malwarebytes, which reported removing seven trojans. I'm not sure whether the system is actually clean or how much may have been compromised. Should I perform a clean Windows 11 installation, or are thorough scans enough? I have many games, mods, and other files on my C: drive that I'd rather not lose or reinstall, so I'd like to know how to back up safely if a reinstall is necessary. Afterward, I enabled a phone-based passkey for Discord and my banking account, but I'm also concerned that saved credentials or active sessions may have been exposed.

A system restore isn’t a reliable cleanup method for a trojan. Restore points can be infected, deleted, or left with malicious files and settings intact. You can run an offline antivirus scan as an additional check, but with seven detections and uncertainty about what was executed, I wouldn’t rely on scanning alone.

Treat the computer as potentially compromised until it’s wiped. From a different, trusted device, change your email, banking, Discord, and other important passwords, revoke active sessions, and contact your bank if anything unusual appears. Passkeys and two-factor authentication help, but they don’t guarantee that an attacker didn’t already steal a session or credentials.

The safest option after multiple trojans were detected is to back up only personal files you’re confident are safe and perform a clean Windows installation. Malware can hide or make system changes that scanners don’t completely undo. Don’t back up programs, installers, scripts, or suspicious mods; reinstall those from trusted sources after Windows is reset. Before wiping anything, make sure your important files are copied elsewhere and that the backup opens correctly.
