My computer connects to Wi-Fi but keeps losing internet access

I've had a new Wi-Fi connection for a couple of months, and it works normally on every other device in my home. On my computer, though, the connection works for a few minutes and then changes to "Connected, no internet." This has been happening for months. I tried adding a Wi-Fi antenna and a range extender, but neither fixed the problem. The computer works normally when I use a phone hotspot, and it also worked fine with my previous home Wi-Fi. The router is a Rogers Xfinity Gateway Gen 2, although I don't know my computer's exact specifications. What should I check to figure out whether this is a computer, router, DNS, or extender problem?

Temporarily turn off or unplug the Wi-Fi extender and test the computer while connected directly to the main gateway. Extenders can lose their connection to the router even while your computer still shows a strong Wi-Fi signal, creating exactly this kind of “connected, no internet” status. If the problem stops without the extender, either reposition it, reconfigure it, or leave it out if the main router’s signal is already strong enough.

More details about the computer would make troubleshooting much easier: whether it runs Windows or macOS, the wireless adapter model, and the computer’s network settings. If it disconnects only from this home network but works reliably on other Wi-Fi networks, focus on the gateway’s compatibility settings. Trying separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names instead of one combined name can also help if band steering is causing the adapter to switch bands badly.

Check the router’s settings for device isolation or similar access-control options and make sure they aren’t blocking this computer. Also look at the gateway’s connected-device list and event logs if available. Since the issue affects only one device, the router may have a device-specific setting, stale lease, or compatibility problem with band steering between the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.

“Connected, no internet” means the computer is still connected to the wireless network, but it can’t reach the internet. Since other devices work and the computer works with a hotspot, the problem may be specific to how this computer interacts with your home router. Check whether the computer is receiving its IP address automatically through DHCP, and try renewing the connection or resetting the network settings. DNS problems are another possibility, so testing with a different DNS server can help narrow it down.
