RTX 3080 Causes System-Wide Stuttering After Several Hours

After the PC has been running for a few hours, the mouse begins jumping and the entire system becomes sluggish. Once the problem starts, it continues until I restart the computer. Task Manager does not show unusually high CPU, GPU, or disk usage during the slowdown.

My system has a Ryzen 7 5700X, an ASUS TUF RTX 3080, 32 GB of 3200 MHz RAM, Windows 11, and an ASUS TUF GAMING B550M-PLUS WIFI II motherboard. I'm currently using NVIDIA driver 610.88.

LatencyMon reports nvlddmkm.sys with a highest execution time above 5 ms while the stuttering is occurring. Event Viewer also logs NVIDIA driver Event ID 153 with an error on GPUUID 700.

Windows is fully updated, and I have already run SFC and DISM, which repaired some files. Armoury Crate has also been updated. Could this be a driver issue, Armoury Crate or another background utility, overheating or degraded GPU thermal paste and pads, or a power-delivery problem? I'm considering removing Armoury Crate, doing a clean driver removal and reinstall, trying an older NVIDIA driver, and checking GPU temperatures and power connections. Has anyone dealt with similar long-uptime stuttering that only clears after reboot?

Also inspect the card’s temperatures, especially the GPU hotspot and memory temperatures, after it has been running for several hours. If the card has never been serviced and is a few years old, dried thermal paste or worn thermal pads could cause instability even if the average GPU temperature looks normal. Check the power connectors and make sure the card is using separate PSU cables where applicable.

Try removing Armoury Crate completely, preferably with ASUS’s dedicated cleanup tool, then disable any remaining RGB or hardware-monitoring services. Those utilities can sometimes interfere with graphics drivers or add unnecessary background hooks.

A clean NVIDIA driver reinstall would be a good next step. Download the driver beforehand, remove the existing driver with DDU in Safe Mode, and then install the new driver. Afterward, test separately on the desktop, while playing a regular 60 FPS video, and while gaming. Check LatencyMon each time and note whether another driver starts showing unusually high execution times.

A reboot temporarily resetting the problem is consistent with the display driver or Desktop Window Manager getting into a bad state. nvlddmkm.sys can appear in LatencyMon during normal 3D activity, so the important clue is whether the high latency only appears alongside the persistent system-wide stutter.
