I recently bought an overbuilt Seasonic TX-1300 Titanium power supply and am considering a GPU upgrade from my RX 6700 XT, which struggles with stuttering in the Gothic Remake. I'm deciding between the RX 9070 XT and RTX 5080. The 5080 is faster and would offer more headroom for max settings, ray tracing, and future single-player games, but it costs considerably more and I'm uneasy about the 16-pin power connector and the possibility of overheating or melting.
My target resolution is 1440p, and I mainly play games such as Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Gothic, The Witcher 3, Resident Evil 9, and heavily modded Skyrim with an ENB. Would the RX 9070 XT be sufficient for several years of high-quality 1440p gaming, allowing the savings to go toward a CPU, motherboard, and memory upgrade, or is the RTX 5080 worth the extra cost for ray tracing and maximum settings?

A 5080 can make sense if it fits comfortably within your entertainment budget and you want to max everything without tweaking settings. I play at 1440p and bought one for that exact convenience, not because I needed it. The 9070 XT is the sensible choice, while the 5080 is the premium option for people willing to pay substantially more for extra headroom.
If the price gap is close to double, I’d choose the RX 9070 XT with its standard dual 8-pin setup and put the savings toward the CPU upgrade. Use properly seated, separate power cables and you shouldn’t need to worry about the connector constantly while gaming. The 5080 is faster, but for your resolution and game list it sounds more like an optional luxury than a necessity.
The main reason to choose the 5080 is path tracing and consistently stronger ray-tracing performance. NVIDIA also has some advantages in ray reconstruction and frame generation. If you mostly care about rasterized performance and conventional ray tracing, the 9070 XT is much easier to justify, though neither card will literally max every demanding game at high frame rates.
For standard 1440p gaming, the RX 9070 XT is probably the better value. The RTX 5080 is roughly 15–20% faster in many workloads, but depending on local pricing it can cost 70–100% more. That extra money may be better spent on a newer CPU platform, especially if you’re still using older memory and a previous-generation processor.
At 1440p, the 9070 XT should handle your games very well and has enough performance to remain useful for years. A 5080 is more of a luxury purchase at this resolution unless you specifically want the fastest ray tracing, path tracing, frame generation, and upscaling features available.
The price difference is especially large where I live: around $1,000 for a 9070 XT versus more than $2,000 for a 5080.

An X3D CPU is next on my upgrade list, so saving money on the GPU could help me replace the motherboard and memory as well.
