Should I Buy the $750 Radeon 9070 XT or the $1,400 GeForce RTX 5080?

I'm finishing my first PC build and can choose between a refurbished Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon 9070 XT for $750 or a refurbished Astral GeForce RTX 5080 for $1,400. I'm coming from a PS5 Pro and want to play mostly at 4K, with some 1440p gaming. Ray tracing is important to me, so I'm wondering whether the 9070 XT can deliver a good 4K experience with RT enabled, or whether the 5080's extra performance and upscaling features justify nearly twice the price.

I’d choose the 9070 XT and put the savings toward a better monitor, more storage, or a future upgrade. It can run 4K games above 60 FPS in many titles, and 1440p should be excellent. A cheaper 5080 model would be worth considering if you really want Nvidia’s RT, DLSS, or frame-generation features, but $1,400 is a steep premium for the performance increase.

For regular ray tracing, the 9070 XT is closer to the 5080 than the price difference suggests. The bigger gap appears with path tracing, where the 5080 can be dramatically faster in certain games. Even then, the 5080 usually needs upscaling and frame generation for demanding 4K path-traced titles, so it isn’t a magic max-settings solution. If RT is something you occasionally use rather than your main priority, the 9070 XT makes more sense.

If you’re building around Blender, CUDA, AI tools, or other Nvidia-specific software, the 5080 may be easier to justify. For gaming alone, though, the Radeon is the sensible purchase. At 4K, a 15–20% boost often means something like 60 FPS becoming 70 FPS, not a completely different experience.

The 9070 XT is the much better value here. The 5080 is generally only around 15–20% faster in traditional rendering, while costing roughly 86% more. The Radeon is fully capable of 4K gaming, especially with sensible settings or upscaling, and it should handle 1440p very comfortably. Unless you specifically need CUDA, heavy productivity features, or the best possible ray tracing and path tracing performance, I’d keep the $650 difference.

One caution: check the exact power connector and adapter situation on that Sapphire model. There have been reports involving high-power connectors, so use a proper native cable from a compatible power supply rather than relying on a questionable adapter. Also compare warranty coverage carefully since both cards are refurbished. I’d avoid paying extra for a premium cooler when a less expensive 9070 XT performs nearly the same.
