I'm planning a new gaming PC with a Radeon 9070 XT, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, B850 motherboard, 32GB of RAM, an 850–1000W power supply, a 4TB SSD, and a Lancool 217 case. I'm now trying to choose the right monitor. I'd prefer an OLED panel, probably QD-OLED because I often play in dark environments, and I'd like at least 180Hz refresh rate.
I play a mix of graphically demanding single-player games, older and indie titles, competitive multiplayer games, and co-op or PvE games. The 9070 XT and 9800X3D should handle 1440p at very high frame rates, but I'm less sure how comfortable 4K gaming would be, especially in demanding games.
The main choices I'm considering are a 27-inch 1440p OLED, a 32-inch 4K OLED, or possibly a 34-inch 3440×1440 ultrawide. Is the extra cost of 32-inch 4K OLED worth it with this hardware, or would 27-inch 1440p OLED provide a better balance of image quality, high refresh rates, and performance? I'd also appreciate specific monitor recommendations.

With a 9070 XT, 1440p is the safer choice if 180Hz or higher is a real minimum. At 1440p, the card can often deliver 144 FPS or more, while demanding 4K games may land closer to 60–90 FPS even with upscaling. A 27-inch 1440p OLED at 240Hz would be a strong all-around option, especially if you play competitive games. A 34-inch 3440×1440 OLED is also a great choice if you want more immersion, although some competitive games may use black bars or have limited ultrawide support.
The choice mostly comes down to whether you prioritize image sharpness or frame rate. 4K is absolutely worthwhile to some people, but the difference is less dramatic at smaller sizes and depends on viewing distance. Since you play both competitive and graphically intensive games, 1440p is probably the more flexible option. If you want something between the two standard choices, a 34-inch ultrawide 1440p OLED offers a nice middle ground without the full performance cost of 4K.
I prefer 32-inch 4K because the extra sharpness is noticeable, and it gives you more desktop space as well as a cleaner image in games. At 27 inches, 4K can be somewhat difficult to appreciate unless you sit close, but 32 inches is a much better fit for it. The tradeoff is that you’ll have to use upscaling or reduce settings more often in demanding titles, so it makes less sense if high refresh rate matters more than maximum clarity.
I’d seriously consider a 34-inch 3440×1440 QD-OLED. It gives you more horizontal space and immersion than a standard 27-inch display without being as demanding as 4K. Around 175–180Hz is already plenty for most games, and the 9070 XT should handle that resolution very well. A 34-inch 1440p QD-OLED around 175Hz can be a better value than a 32-inch 4K OLED.
For a single monitor that has to cover everything, I’d choose 27-inch 1440p OLED at 240Hz. It should let the 9070 XT stretch its legs in competitive games while still looking excellent in cinematic games. A 32-inch 4K OLED is beautiful, but you may end up paying for refresh rate that the GPU cannot consistently use in the most demanding games. Make sure to use the panel’s pixel-refresh features and hide the taskbar when possible to reduce OLED image-retention concerns.
