Should I Choose DDR4 or DDR5 for a Budget 3D-Rendering PC?

I'm building a PC on a tight budget and am deciding between 32GB of DDR4-3200, which costs around $250–$300 where I live, and 32GB of DDR5-5600, which costs more than $700. I'd mainly use the system for 3D rendering in 3ds Max and similar workloads, along with general use and gaming. My planned parts are an RTX 5060, possibly upgrading to an RTX 5070 later, an Intel Core i5-14600K or 14600KF, a DeepCool LE720 or another 360mm AIO, an ASUS Prime B760-Plus motherboard, an as-yet-undecided SSD, and a 750W power supply. I've also heard about reliability problems with Intel's 13th- and 14th-generation processors. Does the 14600K have those issues, and are they resolved through BIOS updates? I'm open to recommendations for changing any of these components.

With an RTX 5060, DDR4 is the more sensible choice if DDR5 really costs that much in your area. Put the savings toward a faster GPU, more storage, or better cooling. DDR5 becomes easier to justify around the RTX 5070 or higher, but spending hundreds extra on memory for a 5060 would offer very little benefit. For 3D rendering, 32GB is a reasonable starting point, although 64GB may be worthwhile if your scenes are large.

Before committing to LGA1700, compare the total platform cost with AMD AM5 or Intel’s newer socket. If the 14600KF and B760 board are substantially cheaper in your region, they can still make sense, especially with inexpensive DDR4. However, AM5 or a newer Intel platform gives you a better future upgrade path. Also consider whether a 750W power supply is a high-quality model, since that matters more than simply reaching the wattage number.

The 14600KF is around $200–$250 here, while DDR5 boards and memory are much more expensive. That’s why the older DDR4 platform is currently the budget option for me.

The Core i5-14600K was included in the Intel 13th/14th-generation stability problems, but new chips are generally considered safe when paired with a current BIOS using Intel’s recommended power and voltage limits. Update the BIOS before heavy use and avoid aggressive motherboard auto-overclocking. A BIOS update can prevent further damage, but it cannot repair a processor that was already degraded. Be especially cautious with used 13th- or 14th-generation chips.

If you stay with the RTX 5060, DDR4-3200 is perfectly serviceable and the money is better spent elsewhere. If you can afford it later, an RTX 5060 model with more VRAM—or stepping up to an RTX 5070—could help more with demanding 3D work than moving from DDR4 to DDR5. Make sure the final system has a decent NVMe SSD, since large project files and asset libraries can quickly make a small or slow drive frustrating.
