I'm building a PC on a tight budget and need advice on whether DDR4 or DDR5 makes more sense. The current plan is a Core i5-14600K or 14600KF, an RTX 5060 with a possible future upgrade to an RTX 5070, an ASUS Prime B760-PLUS motherboard, a DeepCool LE720 360mm AIO, a 750W power supply, and an SSD I haven't chosen yet. I'd use the system for gaming, 3D rendering in 3ds Max, and general work. A 32GB DDR4-3200 kit costs around $250–$300 locally, while 32GB DDR5-5600 costs over $700, so DDR5 seems extremely expensive here. Is DDR4 still the sensible choice, or would DDR5 provide enough benefit to justify the extra cost? I've also heard about reliability problems with Intel's 13th- and 14th-generation processors. Does the 14600K have those issues, and are they resolved with newer chips or BIOS updates?

With an RTX 5060, DDR4 is the better value if DDR5 really costs that much in your area. The money saved would have a much bigger impact if put toward a faster GPU, more storage, or a better-balanced build. DDR5 becomes easier to justify around the RTX 5070 or similar performance level, but paying hundreds more for memory alone isn’t worthwhile here. A 32GB kit is a reasonable starting point for gaming and many 3D workloads, though 64GB could be useful if your scenes are large.
Before committing to LGA1700, compare the total cost of the CPU, motherboard, and memory against newer platforms such as Intel’s newer socket or AMD AM5. If DDR5 pricing is unusually high where you live, a DDR4 B760 system can still be a sensible budget option, especially if you find a good CPU-and-board deal. Just remember that the DDR4 platform has less upgrade flexibility, so the choice depends on whether you plan to replace the CPU later.
The 14600KF is roughly $200–$250 here, while DDR5 boards and memory are much more expensive. That’s why the older DDR4 platform is still looking attractive despite the reduced upgrade path.
The 14600K is included in the Intel 13th/14th-generation voltage and degradation discussion. The main problems involved overly aggressive motherboard power and voltage settings, while some earlier 13th-generation chips also had a separate manufacturing-related issue. For a new build, update the motherboard to the newest BIOS before heavy use and make sure Intel’s recommended power limits and baseline settings are enabled. A BIOS update can prevent further damage, but it cannot repair a processor that was already degraded. Be especially cautious with used 13600K/14600K-and-higher chips.
So the 14600K should be fine as long as it’s new and the BIOS is updated with the proper Intel settings?
If you stay with the RTX 5060, DDR4 is perfectly serviceable and should not hold the system back dramatically. If possible, prioritize the version of the graphics card with more VRAM, since that can matter more for modern games and some 3D workloads. Also choose the SSD based on capacity and sustained performance rather than paying extra for small benchmark differences, and verify that the 750W power supply is a reputable model.

That makes sense. I was mainly worried that choosing DDR4 now would limit the system too much, but the local DDR5 and motherboard prices are difficult to justify.
