Should I format an SD card that suddenly became unsupported?

My device suddenly started showing this message: "This device doesn't support this SD Card. Tap to set up in a supported format." I'm not sure what caused it. I don't have another SD card, computer, or USB reader available to test whether the problem is with the device or the card. Could the card be corrupted, and should I reformat it?

Don’t format it yet if there are files you want to keep. Formatting can erase everything on the card. Turn the device off, remove and reseat the card, then check its storage settings to see whether it appears as unmounted or unsupported.

The best next step is to test the card in a computer with a card reader or in another compatible device. If it opens, copy the important files immediately. If nothing can read it, the card or its file system may be failing. Only format it after backing up the data, or if you don’t need anything on it.

The exact device and card type matter, since some devices only support certain formats. Cards used in cameras or dash cams can also be formatted in a way that another device doesn’t understand. If the card keeps becoming unreadable after formatting, replace it rather than trusting it with important data.
