My current system has an RX 9070 XT, an Intel i7-11700K, 32GB of DDR4, an 850W power supply, and a 1440p 240Hz OLED monitor. I play both demanding AAA games and competitive titles. In Battlefield 6 at ultra settings with FSR Quality, I average around 110 FPS but experience noticeable stutters during busy scenes. League of Legends also reaches only about 120 FPS during chaotic fights, despite being a game I expected the GPU to handle easily at much higher frame rates.
XMP, Resizable BAR, and current drivers are already enabled, so I suspect the 11700K is limiting performance through weaker single-thread performance and poor 1% lows.
I'm considering two upgrade paths. The first is buying a Ryzen 7 5800X3D with an AM4 motherboard for roughly $400, keeping my existing DDR4 and using it as a several-year stopgap. The downside is that AM4 is effectively a finished platform with little upgrade potential. The second is spending around $800 on a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, AM5 motherboard, and DDR5 memory. That costs much more while memory prices are high, but AM5 should have additional processor generations ahead of it.
Would the cheaper AM4 option make sense for this graphics card and resolution, or is it better to pay the DDR5 premium and move to AM5 now? I'm especially interested in real-world experience with whether the 5800X3D meaningfully improves stuttering and 1% lows in busy games.

Before spending money, verify that the CPU is definitely the source of the stutter. X3D processors can improve minimum frame rates, but they won’t fix poor game optimization or streaming issues in every large multiplayer map. Monitor GPU usage, CPU thread utilization, frametimes, temperatures, and memory usage during the problem scenes. If the GPU is well below full usage while one or two CPU threads are saturated, then a platform upgrade is much more likely to help.
If you already had an AM4 board, the 5800X3D would be an easy recommendation. Starting from scratch on AM4 is harder to justify, though. A reasonably priced AM5 bundle, possibly with a 7800X3D or a newer X3D model if there’s a sale, would avoid spending several hundred dollars on a platform you already know you won’t upgrade.
That’s also how I’d approach it: wait for a good bundle rather than paying whatever DDR5 costs today. The 11700K is still usable, so there’s no need to rush into an overpriced build.
I wouldn’t build a new AM4 system just to use the 5800X3D. That chip makes the most sense when you already own an AM4 motherboard and can upgrade without replacing the rest of the platform. Once you include the motherboard cost, an AM5 bundle may be surprisingly close in price, especially after selling your current CPU, board, and memory. The 7800X3D should give you stronger gaming performance and a much better upgrade path.
Exactly. Compare the total cost after selling the old parts rather than comparing only the processor prices.
There’s also a middle ground: replace the 11700K and motherboard with a used or discounted DDR4-compatible platform. A newer Intel CPU paired with a suitable board could improve CPU-limited frame rates while letting you keep your current memory. It won’t offer the same future path as AM5, but it may be the cheapest way to reduce the bottleneck without paying the current DDR5 premium.
Just remember that this still requires a new motherboard because newer processors use a different socket. Check board compatibility and VRM quality before buying.

At 1440p and 240Hz, the CPU matters much more than it would at a lower refresh rate. The 7800X3D is already a strong choice; you don’t necessarily need the newest X3D chip unless the price difference is small.
