I currently have an RTX 3050 6GB and plan to upgrade to an RX 9070 XT later. My power supply is a Corsair CX 650W 80+ Bronze, and I'm concerned it may not be sufficient for the new graphics card. Since the GPU purchase is still a long way off, would it be reasonable to install an 850W or 1000W power supply now? I've been considering the Rosewill VMG 80+ Gold, but I've never built or upgraded a PC before and would appreciate advice on whether it's a good choice or if I should wait.

If you want to upgrade now, 850W is a sensible amount of headroom, but 1000W is probably unnecessary for this setup unless you have a specific future build in mind. Focus more on the PSU’s quality, protections, warranty, and newer power standards than on the largest wattage number. I’d be cautious about choosing the Rosewill model without checking an up-to-date independent review; a well-reviewed unit from a reliable platform is the safer choice.
You can install the new PSU now; it will work normally with your current RTX 3050. However, buying it early means its warranty and service life start running before you actually need the extra capacity. If the current PSU is still healthy, waiting and buying the PSU closer to the GPU upgrade may make more sense. Also, if you replace it, remove every modular cable from the old unit—modular PSU cables are not universally compatible, even when they look identical.
I’d probably wait and purchase the PSU and graphics card together. Power requirements and prices may change by the time you’re ready, and a future card might be more efficient than the RX 9070 XT. A quality 650W unit can run some higher-end cards, but the age and condition of the PSU matter just as much as the wattage. Don’t use an old, out-of-warranty unit with expensive new hardware without checking its condition first.
The new PSU won’t harm your current GPU, so installing it early is technically fine. It may even be easier to swap while you’re already working inside the case. Still, there’s no performance benefit until the GPU upgrade, and waiting could let you find a better deal or choose a different PSU based on the graphics card you eventually buy.
A 1000W unit would be overkill for most versions of this build. If the current 650W PSU is in good condition, you may not need to replace it immediately; check the graphics card manufacturer’s recommendation when you’re ready to buy.
