Should I upgrade from an RTX 3060 for 1440p OLED gaming now?

I currently have an RTX 3060 and play at 1080p, but I'm planning to move to a 1440p OLED monitor. I was hoping a graphics card upgrade would be enough for now and have been considering an RTX 4070 Super, 4070 Ti, or RTX 5070. However, used GPU prices in the UK have risen sharply, with newer cards costing roughly £600–£700. For anyone who follows the hardware market closely, is there a realistic chance prices will drop soon, or should I buy a 5070 now if I want to make the move to 1440p?

If your current PC still handles the games you play, waiting is probably the safer choice. The market is unusually expensive, and there’s no clear sign that prices will return to normal soon. If you need the upgrade immediately, though, there may not be much benefit in waiting several months just hoping for a major drop.

Don’t rule out the RTX 3060 yet. At 1440p it can still manage around 60 FPS in many games if you use sensible settings and DLSS. Newer AAA titles may require medium settings, but trying the new monitor with your existing card first could save you spending hundreds for an upgrade that only matters in certain games.

The current pricing is being pushed up by shortages affecting memory and GPU manufacturing, along with demand from data centers. Nobody can predict the market precisely, but a quick return to cheap graphics cards seems unlikely. If you’re comfortable paying £600–£700 and want the performance now, buying is reasonable; otherwise, keep the 3060 and wait for a genuinely good deal.

AMD is worth checking before committing to an Nvidia card. The Radeon RX 9070 is a strong 1440p option and can offer considerably better value, while the RX 9070 XT is faster if your power supply can handle it. Unless you specifically need Nvidia features such as particular ray-tracing, VR, or software support, Radeon may give you more performance for the money.
