I have about €300 available for an upgrade and currently use a Ryzen 5 3600, a Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB, and 16GB of 3200MHz DDR4 memory. I was considering a Ryzen 7 5800X3D so I could keep my current AM4 motherboard and RAM. However, if I sell my CPU, memory, and other parts, I might have around €500 to spend on a new AM5 CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory. Would switching platforms give me better or similar gaming performance, or would it be smarter to stay on AM4?

AM5 is the better long-term platform, but €500 is tight once you include the motherboard, CPU, and DDR5 kit. It only makes sense if you find unusually good used-market deals and are willing to start with a modest processor. Otherwise, upgrade the AM4 system now and save for a more complete AM5 transition later.
If your games are mostly GPU-limited, you may not need an eight-core X3D processor right away. A Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X plus another 16GB of RAM could be a much cheaper upgrade, leaving money for storage or a future platform change. Going from 16GB to 32GB is also worthwhile for newer games and multitasking.
With €300, staying on AM4 is the sensible choice. Even if selling your current parts brings the total closer to €500, a complete AM5 upgrade still needs a CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory, so you would probably end up with a weaker or more compromised build. A Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D would be a much simpler upgrade, and adding another 16GB of DDR4 would help too.
The 5800X3D would be a huge jump from the Ryzen 5 3600, especially in CPU-heavy games. Before paying a premium for it, check the price of the 5700X3D or 5500X3D, since those may offer better value. The best choice depends heavily on local pricing and whether your motherboard supports the chip with a BIOS update.
I’ll compare the 5700X3D and 5500X3D prices as well, since I mainly want a strong gaming upgrade without replacing the whole platform.
That’s the main tradeoff: AM5 gives you a future upgrade path, but forcing the switch now would likely mean spending more for little or no gaming improvement over a good AM4 upgrade.
