I built this PC in 2021 and it still performs well, but I'm wondering whether I should make a few smaller upgrades over time or eventually replace the whole system. I upgraded from an RX 5700 XT to an MSI RTX 3070 Ti last year and was very happy with the improvement. I currently have a Fractal Design Meshify 2 case, ROG STRIX X570-E Gaming motherboard, Ryzen 7 3700X, 16GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4, Samsung 980 Pro and 970 Evo Plus drives, a Deepcool AK400 cooler, Seasonic Focus PX-750 power supply, and several 140mm case fans. The system runs Windows 11 and has never been overclocked. I don't have any major performance problems right now, but I'm concerned that too many parts might become outdated at once. What upgrades would make the most sense, and is there any reason to build a completely new PC soon?

The right choice depends on what you play or what workloads you run, along with your target resolution and frame rate. Your RTX 3070 Ti and current platform are still perfectly capable for 1080p and 1440p gaming. If the GPU is regularly near full usage, a faster graphics card would be the way to improve gaming performance; if the GPU has plenty of headroom but the frame rate is low, then the CPU may be limiting you. Since everything is currently running well, I’d wait rather than upgrade just because the parts are getting older.
A full rebuild doesn’t seem necessary, especially since you’re not currently having performance problems. The best first upgrade would be increasing the memory from 16GB to 32GB. If you eventually need more CPU performance, you can still get a worthwhile upgrade on the AM4 platform instead of replacing the motherboard, memory, and processor together. For gaming, a Ryzen 7 5800X3D-class chip is the strongest upgrade, while a Ryzen 9 5950X makes more sense for heavily threaded workstation workloads.
I’d stay with the current system and upgrade gradually. Add another 16GB of DDR4, then consider an AM4 CPU upgrade later if you start seeing CPU-related performance limits. Moving to AM5 would mean replacing the motherboard and RAM too, so it only makes sense when you actually need a large jump in CPU performance. Your case, power supply, storage, cooling, and motherboard should all remain useful for quite a while.

That’s what I was hoping to hear. I don’t have a specific game or application giving me trouble—the main concern was having to replace several parts all at once later. Adding memory now and keeping an AM4 CPU upgrade in reserve sounds like a better plan than rebuilding immediately.
