I built my current PC about seven years ago with an Intel i5-9400F, GTX 1660 Ti, and 16GB of RAM. I mainly use it for single-player gaming and moderately demanding productivity work. My 1080p monitor is still fine, though I might move to 1440p if a new graphics card could handle it well. Newer demanding games are starting to struggle, and I'd like to play at higher settings. The CPU is generally adequate for productivity, but I occasionally notice it falling behind, and the 16GB of RAM can also become a limitation.
I'm getting close to the point where I want to build an entirely new system, but current RAM prices make me consider waiting until they improve. I'd ideally like 32GB in the next build. Would it make sense to upgrade the GPU now and reuse it in a future system, or should I keep saving and wait until I can replace the whole machine? I'm looking for something roughly midrange and slightly prefer Nvidia because I'm a software engineer, although I'm open to other options. I also live near a Micro Center, so bundle pricing may be relevant.

A GPU upgrade now is probably the most practical move. You can carry it over into the eventual new build, so it isn’t wasted money. Just check whether your current power supply has enough capacity and the right connectors. Your i5 may limit performance in some games, especially at 1080p, but a stronger GPU should still improve visual quality and let you consider 1440p. You could keep using your existing storage and case in the future as well, depending on their condition.
If your current games are mainly GPU-limited, buy the graphics card now and reuse it later. If you’re also seeing CPU and memory bottlenecks regularly, a partial upgrade may feel unbalanced, so saving for a new platform could be better. Either way, don’t buy a high-end card for the current system unless you’re comfortable with some performance being held back until the rest of the build is replaced.
I wouldn’t assume prices will drop soon. They could stay high or even increase, and waiting might mean putting off the upgrade for a year or more. Since you’re near Micro Center, check their CPU, motherboard, and memory bundles before deciding. The savings can be large enough to make a full-platform upgrade more reasonable, even with 32GB of RAM included.
That’s fair. I hadn’t realized how strong the local bundle deals could be, so I’m going to compare those against the cost of upgrading only the GPU. It may be worth making the larger investment sooner if the discount is substantial.
