Should I upgrade my Ryzen 9 3900X or move to a new platform?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 9 3900X with an X570 Aorus Elite motherboard, 64GB of DDR4-3200 CL16 memory, and an RX 6900 XT. I game at 3440×1440 and also use AutoCAD, ETABS, Revit, and Excel. With around $300–$400 available, would it make more sense to replace the 3900X with a 5700X, 5800X, 5900X/5900XT, or 5950X? Should I instead sell my current parts and move to a newer platform, and roughly how much would that upgrade cost?

A 5700X is the best value choice if saving money is the priority. It should be easy to install on your existing board and will still provide a noticeable improvement in gaming smoothness and general responsiveness. For your professional applications, though, a 5900X, 5900XT, or 5950X would offer more benefit because they retain more cores.

Moving to a newer platform would mean replacing the CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory, so the total cost would be much higher than $300–$400 after selling your current parts. At 3440×1440 with an RX 6900 XT, a CPU upgrade may not transform gaming performance anyway. I’d keep the current platform and buy the fastest reasonably priced compatible processor, ideally a used 5900X or 5950X.

I’m mainly trying to save money right now, and I have about $300–$400 available. That makes a drop-in upgrade sound more realistic than replacing the whole platform.

If you want to keep costs under control, a used 5950X is probably the strongest drop-in upgrade. You can keep the X570 motherboard, 64GB of DDR4, and your RX 6900 XT, while gaining a substantial boost in heavily threaded CAD and engineering workloads. It also lets you postpone replacing the entire platform until you actually need to.
