Was Choosing the 9060 XT 16GB Over the 9070 GRE a Mistake for 1080p Gaming?

I have a Ryzen 7 5700X and game at 1080p. I bought an RX 9060 XT 16GB during the summer, before GPU prices increased, to finish upgrading my PC. Lately I've been watching comparisons with the RX 9070 GRE, and it looks noticeably faster despite having less VRAM. I originally chose the 9060 XT mainly because of its 16GB of memory. Did I make the wrong choice, or is the 9060 XT still a sensible card for my resolution?

Try to compare your complete system rather than focusing only on GPU benchmark videos. CPU performance, memory settings, the game itself, upscaling, frame generation, and your monitor’s refresh rate all affect the result. Check GPU utilization while playing: if it isn’t near full load, a more powerful GPU may not improve performance much.

A faster GPU can still help in GPU-limited games, but at 1080p the difference may be smaller than the benchmark graphs suggest. Make sure your RAM profile and processor boost settings are enabled, then judge performance using the games you actually play.

At 1080p, the 9060 XT is more than capable, and the price you paid matters a lot. It should handle modern games at high or ultra settings, with enough VRAM for a good amount of future use. The 9070 GRE is faster, but that doesn’t make your purchase bad—especially if you bought before prices went up.

This sounds more like buyer’s remorse than a genuinely bad upgrade. There will always be a faster card, and the 9070 GRE’s extra performance doesn’t erase the benefits of 16GB of VRAM or the value of getting the 9060 XT before the price increase. If your games run at the settings and frame rates you want, enjoy the card instead of chasing comparison videos.

The 9070 GRE will generally deliver higher frame rates, but both cards are suitable for 1080p. Unless the price difference was very small, the 9060 XT was probably the better value for your situation. At this resolution, you may run into a CPU or game-engine limit before fully benefiting from the faster GPU.

I’ve enabled the relevant BIOS settings, and I know the 9060 XT is sufficient. I was mainly wondering whether the faster card would have helped me get closer to my monitor’s refresh rate.
