I'm looking to upgrade my CPU but want to keep using my existing DDR4 memory because DDR5 prices are still too high for my current budget. I'm in college, so I can't justify spending roughly $1,200–$1,500 on a complete system upgrade right now.
My current motherboard is an ASRock H610M/ac, and I was considering a Z790 DDR4 board to provide enough VRM capacity for an Intel Core i7-14700K. However, finding DDR4-compatible Z790 motherboards has been surprisingly difficult. I'm located in Texas and would appreciate recommendations for specific boards or reliable places to find one. I'm also open to advice on whether a different chipset would make more sense.

DDR4 Z790 boards have mostly disappeared from stores, so used listings may be your only option. However, the MSI B760 Gaming Plus WiFi DDR4 is worth considering. Its VRMs should handle a 14700K without trouble, although B760 doesn’t allow traditional CPU overclocking. That’s probably fine because overclocking a 14700K can add a lot of heat and power draw, and it’s easy to reduce the chip’s long-term stability if the settings are too aggressive.
Be careful with the assumption that a higher-end Z790 DDR4 board will save money. The remaining models are uncommon and often sell at such a premium that the price difference compared with a DDR5 motherboard and memory bundle is very small. It may be worth checking major retailers and local used listings, but compare the total cost before committing.
Before spending much on the motherboard, make sure the upgrade will provide enough benefit for your workload. Moving from a lower-end setup to a 14700K can help substantially in CPU-heavy tasks, but the real-world gain over a capable modern CPU may be fairly modest in some games. Also check that any board you buy supports the 14th-generation processor with the appropriate BIOS version and has adequate cooling and power limits.
