I'm a Linux system administrator at the entry level and I'm new to containers and orchestration. I'd like to learn Docker and Kubernetes from the ground up, ideally with a path that prepares me for the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) exam. What free or low-cost courses, labs, books, and practice environments would you recommend? I can't afford subscription platforms, so I'd also appreciate suggestions for setting up a local practice cluster or finding hands-on video tutorials.

A useful progression is to start with Portainer’s Kubernetes School to understand the core concepts, design principles, and common patterns. After that, work through Kubernetes the Hard Way to see how the components are assembled and how they communicate. The first resource can be completed fairly quickly, while the second is a much deeper project that may take weeks or months the first time. You don’t need an expensive cloud service: an older laptop or desktop with enough memory and a virtualization setup such as Proxmox can provide a practical lab environment.

For hands-on container practice, iximiuz Labs is a strong option. Its interactive environments let you experiment with containers and networking without risking your own machine. For structured CKA preparation, Mumshad Mannambeth’s Kubernetes course on Udemy is commonly recommended and is frequently discounted, so it’s worth waiting for a sale.

Are the iximiuz Labs exercises mainly for practice, or do they also include a full course? I’m looking for both a learning path and practical exercises.
