What CPU and GPU upgrades make sense for my aging 1440p gaming PC?

My gaming PC is about eight years old. I have already upgraded it to 32GB of DDR4 memory and a combination of 1TB HDD and 1TB SSD storage, so I am happy with those parts for now. The current system has a Ryzen 5 2600, an MSI B450M PRO-VDH V2 motherboard, and a Radeon RX 580. I use a 1440p 165Hz monitor, but the current hardware struggles to provide high frame rates. I would like to upgrade the CPU and graphics card without replacing the motherboard, RAM, or storage. What parts would offer the best improvement, and are there any compatibility or power-supply concerns I should check first?

A Ryzen 7 5700X is a good value option for this motherboard, but I would not overspend on a 5800X3D unless you find one at an unusually low price. It is an older platform, so put the savings toward the graphics card or a future full-platform upgrade. Also make sure the latest BIOS is installed before swapping CPUs.

For the graphics card, look for something with more than 8GB of VRAM if you want a good 1440p experience. A Radeon RX 9060 XT with 16GB would be a reasonable pairing, while an RX 9070 XT would provide a much larger performance jump if your budget allows.

Start by updating the motherboard BIOS so it can support a Ryzen 5000-series processor. A Ryzen 5 5600X or Ryzen 7 5700X would be a substantial improvement over the 2600 while letting you keep the rest of the platform. The 5700X is a particularly sensible choice if you want more cores without spending heavily on an older platform.

The CPU and GPU are definitely the parts to prioritize. A Ryzen 5 5600X or Ryzen 7 5700X combined with an RX 9060 XT should be a well-balanced upgrade and a huge step up from the Ryzen 5 2600 and RX 580. Before buying the card, check your power supply's wattage, PCIe power connectors, and overall age.
