What games can an FX-6300 and R9 280X still run?

I recently found my old gaming PC in storage and want to get back into PC gaming. It has an AMD FX-6300 processor, an R9 280X graphics card, 8GB of RAM, and Windows 7. I've been away from PC gaming for years, so I'm looking for recommendations for games that should run well on this hardware, along with any worthwhile upgrades or settings tips.

For easy wins, try older classics such as Freespace 2, along with a huge selection of games from the 2000s and early 2010s. The system should also handle many indie games, older shooters, classic RPGs, and strategy titles without much trouble. Even the timeless options like Minesweeper, 3D Pinball, and SkiFree are still available if you want something extremely lightweight.

The R9 280X is in the general performance range of the graphics hardware used in the base Xbox One. As a rough guide, games released for that generation of consoles are likely to be reasonable targets on this PC. Older action games, RPGs, strategy games, and competitive titles should be especially comfortable. Much newer and more demanding games may run, but expect low settings and possibly around 30 FPS rather than a smooth high-refresh experience.

That’s a good rule of thumb, although the FX-6300 may hold back some newer games even when the graphics card is adequate. Checking CPU requirements as well as GPU requirements will help avoid disappointing results.

The hardware is still usable, but Windows 7 will probably be the biggest limitation because many newer games and launchers no longer support it. Upgrading the operating system should give you access to far more games, assuming the rest of the PC is compatible.

If the motherboard supports it, moving from 8GB to 16GB of DDR3 RAM would be a relatively inexpensive improvement. With a supported version of Windows and 16GB of memory, you should have a large library of games from before roughly 2020 to choose from, especially at 1080p with medium or low settings.
