I'm an 18-year-old in the US switching from Xbox to PC, and I'm new to choosing computer hardware. I have a $3,500 budget for the PC tower only; I'll purchase the monitor, keyboard, and mouse separately. I'm not located near a major computer retailer, so I'll likely order the parts online. What parts would you recommend for a powerful first gaming PC, and should I target 1440p or 4K gaming?

For a strong 1440p build, pair a Ryzen 7 9800X3D or 7800X3D with a Radeon RX 9070 XT. That combination should deliver excellent high-refresh-rate performance, especially with a 1440p OLED or Mini-LED display. You could also use 32GB of DDR5 memory, a fast 1TB or 2TB NVMe SSD, and a quality 750W or 850W power supply.
If you specifically want 4K gaming, spend more of the budget on the graphics card. A Ryzen 5 9600X paired with an RTX 5080 would make sense for that target. For 1440p, though, the 9800X3D or 7800X3D with an RX 9070 XT is generally better value and should handle high refresh rates more comfortably.
That comparison is useful. I’m leaning toward 1440p because it seems like the better balance between image quality, frame rate, and cost.
Before buying anything, decide which games and resolution you care about most. Since the budget only covers the tower, you don’t need to spend the full $3,500. A well-balanced build around $2,000–$2,500 could already be excellent for 1440p gaming. Avoid overspending on unusual memory configurations or an unnecessarily expensive processor; put the savings toward the GPU, storage, or a better power supply instead.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I’ll probably choose the monitor and peripherals separately once I settle on the PC parts.
