I want to replace my elderly laptop with a desktop gaming PC and am considering having a local computer shop assemble it. I'm in the U.S. and have a budget of about $1,500, ideally including a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, though I can go somewhat over if necessary. I'm not a serious gamer and mainly want to play Minecraft, possibly with mods, along with Wizard101 and The Sims. Playing at 1080p is completely fine. I'm unfamiliar with PC components and don't know what specifications to prioritize, so I'd appreciate guidance on a suitable parts list or build. I'm also not near a Micro Center, so I would need to buy parts elsewhere.

Since your games are fairly lightweight, prioritize a balanced build instead of spending the entire budget on a top-end graphics card. A modern six-core processor, 16GB or 32GB of memory, a 1TB NVMe SSD, and a modest dedicated graphics card would be plenty for 1080p. Leave room in the budget for the display and basic peripherals, and check the shop’s warranty and assembly fees before ordering.
For 1080p and those games, $1,500 is much more than you need, especially if that includes the monitor and peripherals. A reasonably priced midrange system with 16GB or 32GB of RAM would handle them comfortably. You don’t need the newest or most powerful graphics card; putting the savings toward a reliable power supply, SSD, and decent monitor would make more sense.
A local shop can build it, but assembling the computer yourself is also possible if you’re interested. It’s mostly following instructions, connecting the parts carefully, and taking your time. If you’d rather avoid the hassle, paying the shop for assembly and testing is reasonable. You could also add a controller if you prefer one for some games.
You could look at a current mainstream platform, or an older AM4-based system if you want to save money. For Minecraft with mods, 32GB of RAM is a nice choice, although 16GB can work for a basic setup. Make sure the PC has an SSD rather than relying on a hard drive, since that will make Windows and games feel much faster.
