I'm planning to replace my GTX 1050 Ti and move to a 1440p monitor. I'm considering an RTX 5060 or RTX 4070, and the 4070 seems appealing because of its 12GB of VRAM. My current system has a Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB of RAM running at 2400 MHz with XMP disabled, and an Aerocool VX Plus 500W power supply. I'm also considering an 800W or 850W replacement PSU, but I'm unsure which model and wattage make sense. What would be the best upgrade path for this setup?

Enable XMP first if your memory supports it; that should let the RAM run at its rated speed and is usually a free performance improvement. The Ryzen 5 3600 and 16GB of RAM can still work with a stronger graphics card at 1440p, although the CPU may limit performance in some games. A 4070 would generally be the stronger choice than a lower-end card, especially if your motherboard only supports PCIe 3.0, but check your board and the specific card before buying.
I’d replace that Aerocool VX Plus before installing a high-end GPU. An 850W unit is more than enough for this system and leaves room for future upgrades, but quality matters more than simply choosing a large wattage. Look for a reputable 80 Plus Gold model with modern protections and the appropriate GPU power connector. Models such as the Montech Century II, ASRock Steel Legend, or Chieftec Vega M can be worth considering if they’re competitively priced in your region.
The graphics card may not be the only limitation here. A Ryzen 5 3600 paired with slow 16GB memory can hold back a modern GPU, particularly in CPU-heavy games. You could install the new GPU now, but upgrading to faster RAM and possibly a newer AM4 processor later would help you get more from it. If buying used, an RTX 4070 can make sense; otherwise, compare it carefully with current-generation cards at the same price.
If you’re shopping second-hand, an RTX 4070 and a good 850W PSU may be a sensible combination. Just verify the PSU’s condition and warranty rather than choosing solely by its advertised wattage.
