What GPU should I buy with a $950 Micro Center credit and a $1,500 budget?

My Sapphire Pulse RX 7900 XTX recently failed, and I now have about $950 in Micro Center credit to put toward a replacement. I mostly play games at 1440p, but I also want to watch video on a 4K monitor while gaming. I can spend up to around $1,500, and I could stretch a little further for a particularly worthwhile upgrade. Should I go with an RX 9070 XT, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, or something else?

The RX 9070 XT is probably the best value for gaming. It should handle 1440p ultra settings at high frame rates and is capable of 4K gaming with adjusted settings. Unless you specifically need Nvidia features, it offers performance close enough to the more expensive cards to make it the sensible choice.

The RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 are worth considering if you care about DLSS, encoding, rendering, or other Nvidia-supported workloads. The 5080 is roughly 15% faster than the 9070 XT in many gaming scenarios, but the price premium can be substantial. Look for a sale, since some Micro Center deals have brought 5080 models down to around $1,400.

For regular 1440p gaming, the extra cost of the 5080 is difficult to justify. It makes more sense if you also use demanding upscaling, video encoding, AI image generation, or other Nvidia-accelerated software.

If you want an Nvidia card, compare current prices between the 5070 Ti and 5080 rather than assuming the 5080 is always the better deal. Some buyers have found 5080 cards around the top of this budget, which makes one worth considering. Otherwise, the 9070 XT is the strongest price-to-performance option.

A replacement RX 9070 XT around $789 before tax is a reasonable upgrade path from a failed 7900 XTX. AMD reliability concerns are not necessarily proof of a general hardware problem, though driver issues can happen. Using a clean driver removal and reinstall may help if you experience instability.

For your stated use, I would save the money and buy the 9070 XT. It should comfortably handle 1440p gaming while you watch video on the 4K display. The 5080 is the faster option and may provide smoother video encoding and upscaling, but it is mainly worth paying for if those features matter more to you than value.
