What GPU should I replace my failed RTX 3080 with for around £500?

My RTX 3080 has served me well for about four years, but it has now genuinely failed and needs replacing. Before it broke, I was also noticing more frequent frame-rate dips in games like Destiny 2 and GTA Online, although the performance issues were not the main reason for replacing it. My budget is around £500, and that is an absolute maximum. What graphics cards would be sensible alternatives, and should I consider troubleshooting or repairing the 3080 first?

Before buying a replacement, check whether the card is actually dead. Monitor GPU and CPU temperatures, usage, power delivery, and fan behavior. If the issue is overheating, replacing the thermal paste and memory thermal pads might bring the card back to life.

A used RTX 3080 could still be a good value if you can find one from a trustworthy seller. It offers performance close to what you already had, so just make sure it has been tested and check its temperatures and condition.

Switching from Nvidia to AMD is generally straightforward for gaming. The main differences are features such as ray tracing, upscaling, and frame generation, so compare those alongside regular game performance before deciding.

For around £500, look at sale prices for cards such as the RTX 5070, RX 7800 XT, or RX 7900 GRE. Compare benchmarks for the games you actually play, since some new cards in this price range may not be a major upgrade over a healthy RTX 3080.

If you can save a little longer, the RX 9070 XT is a stronger option. Prices have been around £600–£680 depending on the model and retailer, and it should provide a more noticeable upgrade than most cards near the £500 limit.

Prices have been moving around a lot, so it is worth watching several retailers rather than assuming the older price is still available.
