What GPU should replace my failed 7900 XTX for $1,000–$1,500?

My Sapphire Pulse RX 7900 XTX recently died unexpectedly, and I have about $950 in store credit at Micro Center toward a replacement. I can spend up to around $1,500, and I'm willing to go somewhat higher if the upgrade is worthwhile. I mainly play games at 1440p, but I also want to watch videos on a 4K monitor while gaming. I'm considering the Radeon RX 9070 XT, GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, or RTX 5080. Which card offers the best value and longevity for this use case?

The RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 are worth considering if you want DLSS, stronger ray tracing, or NVIDIA’s encoding and creative-tool support. The RTX 5080 makes more sense if you can find one close to $1,400–$1,500, since it provides a noticeable step up over the 9070 XT for demanding 4K workloads. At normal pricing, though, the 9070 XT is the better gaming value.

For regular 1440p gaming, the 5080’s extra performance may not justify paying hundreds more. I’d only choose it if the video playback, upscaling, encoding, or NVIDIA-specific features are important.

If you find a Micro Center promotion, an RTX 5080 around $1,429 would fit the budget and provide plenty of headroom for several years. NVIDIA is also generally the safer choice for simultaneous gaming, video playback, upscaling, encoding, and GPU-accelerated applications. Otherwise, a discounted RX 9070 XT around $800 is the sensible purchase.

I ended up choosing a Gigabyte RTX 5080 Windforce because I wanted NVIDIA’s drivers, encoding, and feature set, and I found it at a reasonable price. The 9070 XT is likely the better value, but the 5080 is a strong choice if you can afford it and want a higher-end card for 4K upscaling and mixed workloads.

Several people are reporting that the RX 9070 XT offers performance close to the RTX 5070 Ti for much less money. The 5070 Ti is somewhat faster in some workloads, while the RTX 5080 is roughly another tier above it, but the prices can rise quickly. Compare the actual sale prices at the store rather than choosing solely by model name.

The RX 9070 XT is probably the best value. It handles 1440p ultra settings easily, can manage 4K gaming with some compromises, and is considerably cheaper than the RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5080. Unless you specifically need NVIDIA features or software support, the money saved may not justify the relatively modest performance increase from the more expensive cards.
