What should I install before mounting my motherboard in the case?

I'm building a PC with an Endorfy Arx 700 ARGB case and an MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk Max WiFi motherboard. I'm confused by all the screws and want to know what should be installed first, whether the motherboard can go straight into the case, and how to make sure I mount it correctly without damaging anything.

You can install the motherboard directly into the case, but it’s usually easier to install the CPU, RAM, and possibly the M.2 SSD while the board is outside. Once the standoffs are correct, lower the motherboard into position with the rear I/O area aligned with the case opening, then secure it using the appropriate motherboard screws. Tighten them snugly with a Phillips screwdriver, but don’t overtighten.

First, check that the case has the correct motherboard standoffs installed. These are the raised screw posts that keep the motherboard from touching the metal tray. For an ATX board, there are usually nine mounting points, though the exact number depends on the case. Make sure every motherboard hole lines up with a standoff, and remove any extra standoffs that don’t line up—an extra one underneath the board can cause a short. Don’t mix different standoff types if the case includes more than one design.

I’m still not very confident reading the manual, so I’ll double-check each hole and standoff before putting the board in.

A recent full PC-building video can make the order much clearer, especially for connecting the front-panel cables and power supply. The case and motherboard manuals should still be the final reference, since screw types and preinstalled standoffs can vary between models.
