What should I know before switching from Windows 11 to Fedora?

I'm planning to install Fedora and would like to know what to expect compared with Windows 11. In particular, which everyday applications may not be available, what alternatives people use, how much I can customize the desktop, and whether there are any hardware, driver, gaming, or workflow issues I should prepare for.

There isn’t one universal list of missing features because it depends on what you use every day. Make a checklist of your essential apps, games, cloud storage, and hardware, then look up each one’s Fedora support. Expect a learning curve, but don’t assume that every difference is a problem—many people prefer the control, lower background resource use, and lack of built-in advertising.

You don’t have to make the change irreversible. Try Fedora from a live USB, use a dual-boot setup, or install it on another drive first. That lets you test your hardware, applications, and games before committing. For Microsoft services, many features such as Outlook and Teams can be used through a browser, though the experience won’t always match the Windows versions.

Fedora gives you much more control over the desktop and system than Windows, including the interface, updates, installed services, and privacy settings. The trade-off is that you’ll sometimes need to search for solutions, learn a different workflow, or find a replacement application. You already had to learn Windows, so the same is true here.

The biggest adjustment is that some familiar Windows programs don’t have native Linux versions. Microsoft Office’s desktop suite and Adobe’s main applications are the most common examples, although web versions, compatibility tools, or alternatives such as LibreOffice and other creative apps may cover your needs. Check your must-have software before switching.

Gaming is generally good for many titles, but games using strict anti-cheat or heavy DRM may not work. It’s worth checking your regular games and their anti-cheat support first. Hardware is another thing to verify, especially Wi-Fi, graphics cards, printers, and unusual peripherals, since some drivers can require extra setup.
