After dealing with PC crashes for about two months, I think I found the cause: one of my two DDR5 memory sticks appears to have failed. Replacing the whole kit is expensive, so I'm wondering whether I can buy a single 16GB DDR5 stick instead. I understand the basics of MT/s and CAS latency, but what specifications need to match for the replacement to have the best chance of working reliably?

Before declaring the module dead, test both sticks individually in the same motherboard slot and run a memory test. Also try reseating the module, blowing dust out of the slot with compressed air, and gently cleaning the contacts with isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth. That can rule out a poor connection rather than a failed stick.
Check the memory manufacturer's warranty first. Many reputable RAM brands offer lifetime warranties, so you may be able to replace the failed stick without buying new memory. If it really is out of warranty, try to match the capacity, DDR5 type, rated speed, CAS latency, voltage, and preferably the complete timing set. Even then, mixing separate sticks isn't guaranteed to be stable.
A similar DDR5 stick—such as a 16GB module rated around 6000 MT/s with CL36—will often work, but there’s no guarantee when combining modules from different kits. Matching the model number is safest, though buying one identical stick still may not behave exactly like the original matched pair.

Unfortunately, the RAM is outside its warranty period, so I’ll have to look at a replacement.
