What should I prioritize when choosing an ergonomic chair for long PC sessions?

I need a new chair for spending several hours at my computer each day. I'm trying to understand which features actually matter, such as mesh versus padded upholstery, adjustable lumbar support, armrests, seat depth, and overall ergonomics. I'm not considering expensive premium brands because they're outside my budget and importing a used chair to my region would likely cost more than buying locally. What should I look for, what should I avoid, and are there any reasonably priced office chairs worth considering?

Avoid bucket-style chairs with fake racing-car styling, fixed pillows, and very limited adjustments. A breathable mesh back can be great for warm rooms, but a well-padded fabric chair can also work. The important thing is that the back support fits you and can be adjusted instead of being one rigid bump.

If you can find a good used office chair locally, that can be worth considering, but inspect the cushion, recline mechanism, casters, and gas lift carefully. Models such as the IKEA Markus or older professional office chairs can be solid options, though you should still try one first because fit varies from person to person.

A reasonably priced office chair from a local furniture retailer may be a better value than a similarly priced gaming chair. I had a gaming-style chair that became painful during long work sessions, while a wider office chair with adjustable lumbar support and armrests was much more comfortable.

I’d focus on a normal ergonomic office chair rather than one marketed specifically for gaming. Look for a comfortable seat, adjustable armrests, useful lumbar support, and several adjustment points. Try chairs in person if possible, since comfort and fit matter more than the label.
