We're a small business setting up barcode scanning for the first time. We need to scan labels on pallet rows from roughly 20 feet away, and I'm considering an extended-range Zebra DS3600 or DS3678. I'm unfamiliar with warehouse scanners and would like advice on whether that's the right choice, whether used units are worth considering, and if there are more affordable alternatives. The scanner would primarily send barcode data to a tablet, so we probably don't need a built-in display.

Don’t underspend on equipment that will be dropped and used constantly. Zebra, Honeywell, and Datalogic all make dependable industrial scanners, and Datalogic has worked well for us. If the scanner will be paired with managed tablets, a device-management platform can also make configuration and troubleshooting easier. You likely don’t need a screen on the scanner if it only has to transmit scans to a tablet.
Since the labels will be on pallets, make them as large and durable as your space allows. A larger label attached to the pallet or stretch wrap may scan much more reliably than a small permanent label. Stretch-wrap labels are easy to replace but may need reprinting, while a properly protected pallet label will last longer. Buy only from a reputable seller and verify the return policy, especially for used scanners.
The Zebra DS3600 extended-range model is a strong fit for this distance. Keep in mind that scan range depends heavily on the barcode’s physical size and print quality, not just the scanner. For around 20 feet, labels with bars roughly 3 inches tall or larger may be necessary. The DS3678-ER is another rugged model in the same family and is designed for demanding warehouse use.
Look for models marked ER or LR, meaning extended or long range. Used equipment can reduce the cost, but check the battery, charging cradle, scan engine, and physical condition carefully. Also test the scanner with the exact label size and barcode type you plan to use before committing to a large purchase.
That makes sense. I’m mainly looking for a scanner that can send the barcode directly to a tablet, so a display probably wouldn’t add much value for us.
