What’s the best gaming PC build for around $1,000?

I'm building my first gaming PC and have about $1,000 to spend on the computer itself. Gaming performance is my priority, and I want to get as much value as possible from the budget. I was initially considering an NVIDIA graphics card, but I'm open to AMD if it offers better performance or value right now. The monitor, keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals will be purchased separately. What parts or prebuilt options would you recommend?

Another budget-friendly option is starting with a used office PC that has a decent five-year-old Core i7, then adding a midrange graphics card and upgrading the power supply if necessary. Just make sure the case has enough room, the power supply is appropriate, and the system uses standard components.

Yes, a $1,000 gaming PC is still possible, though prices may not be as favorable as they were previously. AMD graphics cards often provide better performance per dollar than NVIDIA at this budget, so it’s worth comparing both instead of locking yourself into one brand.

A new build around this price can work, but don’t overspend on the processor or motherboard at the expense of the GPU. A current six-core AMD processor, 32GB of DDR5 memory, a 1TB NVMe SSD, and a strong midrange Radeon card would be a sensible balance. Set aside money for a case and a quality power supply, since some sample builds leave those out or use questionable units.

A higher-end build with a Ryzen 5 9600X and Radeon RX 9070 can be put together for roughly $1,500, but it’s well above the original budget. Waiting for sales on memory and other components could help, though it’s better not to compromise on the power supply just to save a little.

A used gaming PC may offer the most performance for your money. Look for a system with a reasonably modern processor, a reliable power supply, and a midrange graphics card. Deals with an RTX 4070 have reportedly appeared around $1,000, although you should test the system and verify the parts before buying.
