Our organization operates across six sites, but IT staff are only based at two of them. We often need to collect local monitoring data, test internet performance, troubleshoot networking, or access systems at the remote locations. At the moment, those sites only have networking equipment and employee PCs—there are no servers or other dedicated infrastructure. What do you use as a lightweight management machine at sites like these? I'm considering a NUC or similar mini PC rather than deploying a full server, but I'd like to hear what has worked well for others.

If you already have an RMM platform and network monitoring such as PRTG, you may not need a dedicated management computer at all. An agent on an existing endpoint can provide remote access and management, while your monitoring system handles network health and performance. A headless micro PC is still useful as a reliable fallback when every user machine is turned off or unavailable.
A Raspberry Pi or similar low-power device is enough for many locations. Connect the sites with a site-to-site VPN, then use the device for local checks and remote access. Tools such as Zabbix Proxy, Grafana Alloy, or other lightweight monitoring agents can send data back to a central dashboard, including connectivity, bandwidth, and device availability.
A small business mini server or firewall appliance running Linux can provide more flexibility than a basic desktop. You could use WireGuard for secure access, ntopng for traffic analysis, and a remote-console tool for administration. Make sure the device itself is backed up, restricted, centrally monitored, and not exposed directly to the internet.
Whatever hardware you choose, build in at least two independent access paths. A VPN or remote-management agent can fail because of a configuration problem, outage, or broken update. Having a second route—such as a management agent on another device or an out-of-band option—can save a long trip to the site.
A small NUC or repurposed micro desktop works well as a jump box at sites without servers. Just treat it like production infrastructure: keep it patched, monitored, documented, and protected. Avoid leaving an unmanaged Windows desktop permanently logged in, and don’t deploy an undocumented Linux box that becomes an invisible attack surface.
