What’s the Most Affordable PC Build for Linux, Programming, and Everyday Browsing?

I'm looking for an inexpensive desktop that I can build myself. My main tasks will be writing code in Python, C, and C++, plus web browsing and watching YouTube. I plan to install Ubuntu or another lightweight Linux distribution, so I don't need a gaming-focused system or a powerful graphics card.

I originally considered an older DDR3 system with an Intel Core i3 and integrated graphics. I'd also like a case that can hold three or four hard drives, although I'm not sure whether that's actually necessary for my use. There are so many hardware options and trade-offs that I'm having trouble deciding between buying older parts, a used office computer, or something newer. What would be the most cost-effective and reliable approach?

You probably don’t need three or four hard drives for writing and programming. A 256GB or 512GB SSD is enough for the operating system, tools, projects, and normal browsing, and it will feel much faster than several mechanical drives. If you need extra capacity later, add a separate hard drive or use external storage. An M.2 NVMe drive is ideal, though a SATA SSD is also perfectly adequate.

If you want to build something yourself, aim for at least 8GB of RAM, with 16GB being more comfortable for modern web browsing. A relatively recent 6- or 8-core processor with integrated graphics would be plenty, and you can skip the dedicated GPU. A used office desktop may also leave room for a graphics-card upgrade later, provided the case and power supply support one.

For this kind of workload, a used corporate desktop or refurbished business laptop is probably cheaper and easier than building from individual parts. Systems with 6th–9th generation Intel processors are often available for under $200 and should handle Linux, programming, browsing, and video playback without trouble. Look for models with standard replaceable components if you may want to upgrade later.

Linux runs well on older hardware, but very old parts come with risks. A cheap system might work perfectly for years, or it might need repairs soon after you buy it. Factor in electricity use, storage health, and replacement parts rather than looking only at the initial price. A reasonably recent used system can be better value over time than an aging DDR3 build.
