Canned-air multipacks have gotten surprisingly expensive, so I'm thinking about switching to a rechargeable electric blower for cleaning my GPU, case filters, and intake fans. My main concern is preventing the fans from spinning freely while the PC is shut down and unplugged. Holding each fan by the hub with a finger works, but it's awkward in tight areas. What nonconductive tool or method do you use to keep the blades stationary without damaging the fans or components?

Canned air is generally safe if used correctly, but keep the can upright and avoid spraying liquid or frost onto the components. Short bursts also help prevent condensation. Even so, an electric duster tends to be cheaper and less wasteful after a few cleanings.
An electric blower paired with a soft anti-static brush is a great setup for dust that’s stuck to filters or heatsinks. Unplug the PC, ground yourself to the case, and restrain each fan gently while cleaning.
A small folded piece of cardboard works well as a simple, nonconductive wedge. You can also gently hold the fan at the hub or use a soft cloth, but don’t press hard against the blades or force them to stop suddenly.
A rechargeable electric duster is usually the better long-term purchase. It costs more upfront, but you can use it repeatedly and in any orientation. Just make sure to hold the fan blades still so the blower doesn’t spin them excessively.
