I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 5600G with an RTX 5060 and I'm considering an AM4 CPU upgrade. The main options I'm looking at are the Ryzen 5 5600X, Ryzen 5 5500X3D, and Ryzen 7 5700X or 5800X. From the benchmarks I've found, the 5500X3D often performs similarly to the 5800X at stock settings while using less power, but I haven't found much information about overclocking it. My 5600G is running a static 4.5 GHz overclock and delivers roughly a 25–40% improvement in CPU-limited games, although it draws around 90–100 W. Would the 5500X3D benefit noticeably from a similar overclock, or would one of the other CPUs be a better choice for gaming performance and value?

The 5600X would be a fairly small upgrade from a 5600G and probably isn’t worth buying unless it’s dramatically cheaper. The 5700X or 5800X makes more sense if you also care about multicore workloads, streaming, or having eight cores. For gaming alone, compare game-by-game benchmarks and prices, because the 5500X3D’s extra cache can help a lot in some CPU-bound titles but won’t automatically beat a higher-clocked eight-core CPU everywhere.
For gaming, the 5500X3D is probably the strongest value of those choices, especially in CPU-limited games. However, X3D chips generally have much less overclocking headroom than a standard Ryzen processor, so you shouldn’t expect the same kind of gain you got from manually pushing the 5600G. Look into the platform’s supported boost, PBO, or curve-tuning options rather than assuming a fixed all-core overclock will work the same way.
Since the 5800X3D is priced close to $400 in your area, it doesn’t sound competitive with the sub-$250 options. I’d choose between the 5500X3D for gaming-focused performance and the 5700X or 5800X for a more balanced system. Also factor in cooling and power use: your 5600G’s 90–100 W overclocked draw doesn’t necessarily mean an X3D chip can be pushed the same way, and extra voltage may reduce the efficiency advantage.

That’s the part I’m unsure about. The benchmarks I’ve seen sometimes put the 5800X level with or ahead of the 5500X3D, so I’d like to know whether the extra cache still wins once both chips are tuned.
