I have an MSI B850 motherboard and I'm trying to run my memory at its rated speed. In the BIOS, the Memory section on the left lets me choose EXPO or XMP, while the DRAM section on the right has a gear icon with Default and XMP options. What is the difference between these two controls, and which one should I change?

EXPO and XMP are preset memory profiles: EXPO is intended for AMD platforms, while XMP was created for Intel systems. XMP can sometimes work on AMD, but EXPO is usually the better starting point for compatibility and stability. Keep in mind that running memory above the CPU’s official specification is technically an overclock, so stability can vary by processor and memory kit. If you get crashes or blue screens, lower the speed or return to Default.
For an AMD system, use the EXPO profile rather than XMP. The Memory option on the left is likely the main profile selector, so choose EXPO 1 there, save, and reboot. You generally shouldn’t need to configure both places. Afterward, check the reported memory speed in the BIOS or with CPU-Z to confirm it applied.
I was mainly confused because both the Memory area and the DRAM gear seemed to offer profile settings. I’ll use EXPO in the main Memory section and leave the other option alone.
