I have an H61M-S1 motherboard with an Intel Core i3-3220. I'm not sure whether it's good enough for reasonable gaming, especially games like Marvel Rivals or Counter-Strike. Since I'd like to upgrade the processor, which compatible CPU would be the best choice?

Your board uses the LGA1155 socket, so look for a 2nd- or 3rd-generation Intel Core processor. The strongest straightforward upgrade is usually an i7-3770, assuming the motherboard BIOS supports it. An i7-2600 or i5-3570 can also be worthwhile if you find one significantly cheaper. Check that you have a decent CPU cooler, since the i7 may run warmer than your current chip.
You can also look at compatible Xeon E3-1230 v2 or similar models, which offer performance close to an i7 for less money. Compatibility and BIOS support can vary, though, and some Xeons do not have integrated graphics. For the simplest upgrade, I’d choose the i7-3770, but only if it’s inexpensive and your graphics card is strong enough for the games you want to play.
An i7-3770 would give you four cores and eight threads, which is a big improvement over the i3-3220’s two cores and four threads. However, these CPUs are quite old now, so performance will depend heavily on your graphics card, RAM, and resolution. For Counter-Strike it may be usable with a suitable GPU, but Marvel Rivals could still be demanding and may not run smoothly.
Also compare the total price with a newer used motherboard-and-CPU combo. If the i7-3770 costs close to $100, putting that money toward a newer platform is probably the better long-term choice.
