I found several refurbished GPUs locally, all with warranties, and I'm trying to choose the best price-to-performance option for my AM4 gaming build. The system has a Ryzen 5 5600 and 32GB of RAM. My options are an RTX 3070 for $200, an RTX 3080 for $320, or a Radeon RX 7800 XT for $360. I mainly play at 1080p, but I may upgrade to 1440p later. Which card makes the most sense, considering performance, VRAM, potential CPU bottlenecks, power usage, and long-term value?

For strictly 1080p, the RTX 3070 is the most balanced match for the Ryzen 5 5600 and costs much less. The faster cards may be held back in some CPU-limited games, especially at high refresh rates. That said, a CPU bottleneck isn’t necessarily a problem here—the 7800 XT is such a good deal that you could upgrade the processor later and keep the same GPU for a noticeable performance improvement.
The RX 7800 XT is probably the best deal if the refurbished card has been properly tested. It generally beats the RTX 3080 in traditional rasterized gaming, includes 16GB of VRAM, and gives you plenty of room if you move to 1440p later. Ray tracing performance is not the main reason to choose either card, so the 7800 XT is a strong value if you’re mostly playing without ray tracing.
The RTX 3080 is also a reasonable choice at $320. It should handle 1080p for a long time and can still perform well at 1440p. The main drawback is the 10GB of VRAM, which may become limiting in newer demanding games if you use very high textures. Make sure the card is in good condition and that your power supply has enough capacity.
I already have a high-quality 850W power supply, so power requirements shouldn’t be an issue for any of these cards. I’m also open to upgrading the CPU later if that makes the faster GPU worthwhile.
