I'm looking for advice on choosing a lightweight Linux distribution. The laptop is a Lenovo B50-10 with an Intel Pentium processor and 4 GB of DDR3 RAM. I haven't used lightweight distributions before, but I've read about Puppy Linux and several alternatives and I'm unsure which would be the best fit. I'd appreciate recommendations for something that runs smoothly and helps extend the laptop's useful life.

Puppy Linux is a good option if you mainly want to run the system from a USB drive. For a normal installation on the laptop’s internal drive, I’d look at antiX instead because it is designed to be very light on older hardware.
MX Linux or antiX would both be worth trying. You can test them from a live USB first to check performance, Wi-Fi, sound, and suspend support before installing anything.
A distribution using the Xfce desktop should be a good match for those specifications. MX Linux with Xfce or Linux Mint Xfce would be straightforward choices, especially if you want something familiar and easy to configure.
Linux Mint Xfce and Bodhi Linux should both run reasonably well on that hardware. Mint is generally the more beginner-friendly option, while Bodhi is a bit more minimal.
